New Year, New Me

As a therapist, I often see clients feel discouraged when their well-intended New Year’s resolutions become a source of pressure or stress. Resolutions can sometimes be too rigid, relying on an all-or-nothing mindset where the tiniest misstep can derail progress. When we see ourselves as having “failed,” self-doubt and disappointment often take center stage. This is where a shift in perspective can make all the difference: rather than setting strict resolutions, I encourage people to create heartfelt intentions.

Intentions allow for flexibility, self-compassion, and continuous growth. They’re rooted in our values and encourage us to focus on the process rather than the outcome. For instance, instead of resolving to go to the gym five days a week, you might set an intention to move your body in a way that feels enjoyable and nourishing each day. By leaving room for personal choice—maybe it’s a walk one day or yoga the next—an intention creates space for life’s realities and natural rhythms. With intentions, each small step contributes to our overall well-being, fostering a gentler, more sustainable way to welcome the New Year.
